Descriptive Statistics about the Dataset

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) generated a dataset with information regarding the service availed to the Medicare beneficiaries by healthcare facilities in various cities. The dataset entails hospital-specific charges for more than three thousand hospitals in the United States that receive payments paid under Medicare founded on a percentage per discharge. The current research will utilize SPSS to develop a descriptive analysis that will help to gain a mathematical understanding of the data. The variables included in the descriptive were scale variables such as average covered charges, average total payments, and average Medicare payment.

The first step was to import the data into the SPSS. Data was edited in the excel file before importing the data into the SPSS then removing the unwanted data set. Finally, the labels of each variable were entered to make the interpretation process a smooth run. The following output was retrieved after running the descriptive analysis of the data in SPSS.

The output depicts the cases or the units to be at 134,424. The output provides the minimum values and the maximum value for each variable. For instance, the minimum values for the total discharges were at 11, and the maximum was 3383. Therefore, this implies that the lowest number of discharges billed by the provider for inpatient hospital services was 11 and the highest was 3383. Besides, the output provides the mean, variance, and standard deviation. The mean for the total discharges was at 41.45 while the standard deviation was at 48.056. With such a significant deviation, it can be argued that the data is widely spread.
